U.S. Master’s Degree Programs in Future Studies and Prediction Analytics

There are relatively few master’s programs in the U.S. that focus on foresight and/or future studies. Two have been around for many years:

  • University of Houston, College of Technology: M.S. in Foresight. The program also offers extension course, a weeklong certificate, and customizable one-to-five day introductory courses for particular client groups.
  • University of Hawaii in Manoa, Department of Political Science, College of Social Sciences: M.A. in Alternative Futures. It’s designed for students who want to conduct futures research professionally from a political science perspective.

For a more global perspective representation of such programs, see Global Foresight’s listing of international programs.

In the U.S., there are also very few master’s degree in predictive analytics per se. Northwestern University offers an online M.S. in Predictive Analytics, and the University of Notre Dame offers an M.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics with a specialty in Predictive Analytics.

However, there’s been a huge boom in the creation of master’s programs that focus on analytics, which includes predictive analytics. For an alphabetical listing by university, see the table below or, for even more detail, the list provided by the Institute for Advanced Analytics. In addition, there are various master’s programs in machine learning, which contain a lot of the same types of predictive techniques.

Compared to “future studies” and “analytics,” the word “forecasting” has a much broader meaning in academia. It can apply to anything from business planning to economic forecasting. The University of Albany, for example, offers an M.A. in Economic Forecasting.

What all these programs have in common, however, is the teaching of methodologies for reflecting on and, to some extent, predicting the probability of possible futures.
